Our NASA Kick Off assembly on October 20, 2006 , was a success! CMS students Lance Cook, Kayla Bigmeat, Josh Hornbuckle and Tyler Arnold worked the sign in table as greeters for the guests and NASA officials. JROTC and the CHS band opened the assembly for grades 5-12, teachers, parents, school board, and tribal leaders. Chief Hicks addressed the audience followed by the Bottchenbaugh Cherokee Dancers and CHS Cherokee Singers. CMS students Amber Ledford, Rayna Davis, Adam Smith and Kayla Smith introduced our guests. Astronaut Bill McArthur, Stephen Jurczyk, and James Stofan gave a NASA presentation for the student body. Astronaut Bill McArthur showed wonderful footage from his four missions in space and time at the International Space Station. We hope you enjoyed the program. If you missed it, be sure to mark your calendar for the December 6 StarLab Program!
Our Middle School NASA team teachers, Bette Fitzgerald, Scott Freeman, Carol West and RL Taylor are pictured below with Middle School principal David Locklear and Astronaut Bill McArthur Jr.
You are invited to our next NES event :
STARLAB on Wednesday, December 6, in the CHS auditorium. You will enter a portable planetarium called StarLab from the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute. Groups of about 30 students at a time will be seated in the inflatable igloo-shaped dome to see the solar system projected on the walls to learn about astronomy from Dr. Bob Hayward. Check with your child to see what time their class is scheduled for the StarLab. Thanks to Gear Up for sponsoring this event.
Cherokee Middle School was featured in the November 9, 2006 edition of the The Sylva Herald newspaper. We are very proud of our staff members for making this dream come true.
