We are the Horizon's Math Program for K through 6th.
Our purpose in this classroom is to provide the foundations for a lifetime of using the unique language of Mathematics. We strive to challenge your children to develop an understanding not only of the mechanics of Math, but also the underlying principles and intertwining of Math in almost every aspect of every day living.
Each student is encouraged to learn the basics (ie. addition facts and times tables) and use this basic know-ledge to learn the principles of fractions, algebra, geometry and beyond. We hope that each child will be able to challenge conventional thinking and develop the critical thinking skills necessary to analyze information presented, sift out unnecessary and misleading
information, determine the speaker's (writer's) bias, and develop a logical conclusion.
All aspects of Math will be explored including the basic Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication, as well as Decimals, Fractions and Algebra. We will also investigate using money wisely including analyzing advertising and personal investing. The investment section will concentrate on the large sum (per capita monies) that each child receives at age 18 (after High School graduation.

Just Who Is MR. BARRETT ?
Mr. Robert Barrett has lived in Western North Carolina (Maggie Valley) for the last six years. He and his wife, Pat came to the area to work with abused and neglected children as house parents at the emergency shelter (Haywood Mountain Home) in Waynesville. They also served as house parents at the Baptist Maternity Home in Asheville for 1 1/2 years. During that time, Mr. Barrett had dealings with almost every school in Haywood County and Asheville High and Middle Schools. He is committed to challenging each student to excel...to compete with himself/herself to the best of his/her ability. High expectations result in high achievement.
Mr Barrett is a graduate of the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY and attended Western Michigan University and Alpena Community College to complete his elementary certification. He has taught Fifth Grade and numerous evening classes in investing prior to coming to Cherokee. Much of his Math focus is in investments as he spent 15 years as an investment counselor/Stockbroker in Michigan.
Living in Maggie Valley, he enjoys his beautiful commute to Cherokee as well as hiking and exploring the Greay Smokies. He enjoys all outdoor activities as well as "indoor" activities such as basketball and reading. He and Pat have been married for 38 years and spend much of their vacation time in Michigan visiting their 2 grown daughters and eight grandchildren.

No gum
You are responsible for all classwork. If you were absent please contact Mr. Barrett for your make-up work. He will NOT contact you for your work. You will be reminded if you are missing work but not given make-up work unless you talk to him after class.
Assignments are given on a daily basis to ALL grade levels.
You can expect your child to have practice work every night except weekends (FRI). Please ask about your child's work when you first see him/her after
school every day. Math is one subject that requires continual practice and repetition so don't be surprised if today's work looks a lot like yesterday's. In fact, you WILL see a lot of repetition of X tables and addition facts, since these two activities are the basis of almost every other math ability including Algebra, Geometry, and even Calculus.
YEAR LONG ASSIGNMENT:
MEMORIZE TIMES TABLES and ADDITION FACTS!!!!!!!!! It is necessary for each child to know
these facts without the use of manipulatives (such as fingers)!
Use flash cards: This summer you can interact with your child using these "old fashioned" tools to practice times tables and addition facts. You can purchase these cards at Wal-Mart or most of the "DOLLAR" stores for a dollar a set (100 facts).
