Description of Services

Students in grades 4-12 who have been identified and placed in Speech/Language correction at Cherokee Central Schools are served by Mrs. Cabe.

We follow  the same schedule as regular teachers and attempt to incorporate similar topics and activities as the regular classroom teachers.    For speech correction, students learn the normal production for the errored sound followed by practice saying the corrected sound in words, later sentences are practiced.   Other materials are provided for additional practice. These steps are repeated many times before the sound is correctly incorporated in the student's conversation.  Language remediation involves increases in vocabulary, recall/retelling, sentence formation--use of grammatical components in receptive/expressive exercise,etc..

We work very hard to prepare for the North Carolina State writing test. The test is conducted in March each year.  In preparation for this test:

each student in speech-language works on writing paragraphs relative to given topics.  We use targeted words that students practice in their sound correction activities.  After some practice exercises, students write five paragraphs on a given topic utilizing the format of introduction, body of the topic, and summary paragraph.  This provides my students with extra writing practice using their syntax and grammar skills.  This reinforces similar practices of their regular classrooms (i.e. noun-verb agreement, verb tenses, pronouns, etc.).   We continue working toward strengthening writing skills weekly.  We feel that this gives each student an extra edge in receptive-written expression.

Parents:

You will see a lot of test prep materials coming home in the following weeks and months as we prepare for the End of Grade tests. Each student in speech class also has the experience of having other classroom information integrated into his/her correction plan.  We extract word lists/vocabulary lists, etc. for further practice.  This helps them generalize more information and correction into other academic areas.  This has proven to elicit greater speech correction.  This also enables each student to realize  that speech/language correction is carried over to all other areas of life and community.

Spotlight

Each student has the opportunity of writing sentences and or short paragraphs on varying topics:  some select topics of historical importance (ex. Black History Month, Women in History), some select topics of science/environment, etc.  We may use pictures for further interest.  While this provides experience in grammar (rules for parts of speech-nouns, pronouns, verbs,  and their usage in sentence formulation-capitalization, punctuation,etc.. We also use targeted words to correct speech errors depending on the particular misarticulations made by each student:  also targeted words are used  to define, classify, categorize.  Furthermore, we utilize these activities to increase dictionary skills, map skills, thinking skills, draw conclusions, make comparisons, etc.
