Welcome to our classroom

In sixth grade we do feel that this is the year that children transition from childhood to young adult. This period in the student's life is full of exciting challenges and goals.  Students are introduced to a variety of subjects, each with its own unique challenges to the students.

In the sixth-grade block we have the opportunity to change classes for each subject.  This introduces each sixth-grader to each sixth-grade teacher. This changing classes does challenge their organizational skills.

The Social Studies curriculum for this period of the student's learning takes the learner into Central and South America.  These classes not only show the students the rich fabric of the lives of people from this area but they are encouraged and taught to make connections to the various people and customs from these parts of the world.

Students learn about world economies, the importance of the geography of an area and the way people react to these unique challenges and resources.

The main goal I have for the sixth-grader is to have that student gain an appreciation for the world that we live in.  To achieve this I will always strive to bring in their experiences and unique culture to the classroom discussions and writings so a real connection is made.

Spotlight

Each student leaned about Ireland and St. Patrick recently and we topped off the class by writing limericks.  We then shared them with the class as time allowed.

We will begin a unit that will correspond with the end of the year cultural events where  we will study the 1700s in the Carolinas with particular emphasis on the changes the Cherokees faced.  While doing this, we will utilize the Timberlake exhibit in the Museum of the Cherokees.  Fortunately we can walk to the museum in a short time.

We are the Wisdom Walkers

The Sacred Path program is a character education program developed to promote caring, responsibility, and respect for self and others while following traditional tribal beliefs. Each grade level meets to discuss issues that need to be addressed within the grade block and the school. Together they determine solutions to any problems that are addressed and work together to solve those problems. Students and teachers work together on the Sacred Path to make the school a safe place to learn.

Parent's Corner

We realize that parents are on tight schedule and we will accommodate almost any meeting time however, our best times to meet for conferences are:  7:30 am, 1:45-2:25pm and after the buses run at 3:00.

Here are some things you can do to help prepare your child for the writing test:

1. When they ask if they can watch TV ask them to give you three good reasons why you should let them watch TV. This will help them work on their persuasive writing skills.

2. Ensure they get plenty of rest the night before the test.

3. On the day of the test make sure they have a really good breakfast and show up for school prepared with sharpened pencils.
