Welcome to Our Classroom

            SIO! O-SI-QWO-TSU

Welcome to Ms. Donner and Mrs. Smith's Second Grade classroom here at our school in the beautiful Smoky Mountains, on the TSALAGI Qualla Boundary Tribal Lands.

We are presently involved in a classroom and community project on recycling, and we would like to invite parents and family members to be involved with us!

Next Thursday we will be walking down to the Oconaluftee River Island near the school and having our Hands-On-Open Science Classroom. Here we will observe and discuss the importance of keeping the river and soil clean, the vitality of river plant and animal wildlife, and the human dependence on this life cycle.

Our class will be observing and discussing the native plants and river cane, sites for spring time nesting sites, taking samples of the water of different areas along the river, and the implications of the human effect on the river picnic area. We will also be carrying trash bags to take samples of various forms of human refuse to analyze back in the classroom, and then begin our project!

During our April Conservation and Recycling Unit we will also have a speaker from the Tribal Forestry and Wildlife, Water Resources and Recycling departments.

You are welcome to come visit our classroom for these presentations, and we are inviting parents and family members to become involved in our project. Please look for further information coming up in April.

We help to improve our school and community by becoming positively involved!

Spotlight

Each student wrote a persuasive essay about his/her favorite president and why they felt their president was them most instrumental in American history.

The students essays are on display outside of our classroom on our bulletin board. Please come by and read the students essays. I am very proud of the efforts they made.

We are Keepers of the Little People

The Sacred Path program is a character education program developed to promote caring, responsibility, and respect for self and others while following traditional tribal beliefs. Each grade level meets to discuss issues that need to be addressed within the grade block and the school. Together they determine solutions to any problems that are addressed and work together to solve those problems. Students and teachers work together on the Sacred Path to make the school a safe place to learn.
